Prussian Heavy Cavalry Sword, 1899-1914, with steel scabbard.

Prussian Heavy Cavalry Sword, 1899-1914, with steel scabbard.

Impressive weapon measures 40 " with a 34" blade which is etched on both sides with 11 3/8" x 15/16" panels showing elaborate and attractive floral motifs above and below one of two different armorial trophies (either a drum, a flag and array of various weapons or a cuirass, a trumpet, and another array of weapons). There is no manufacturer's mark but the throat of the scabbard is stamped "4.1." in two places. The highly chromed, unsharpened blade shows some age spotting but no rust or any signs of abuse. The black composition grip is tightly wrapped with typically German triple lengths of twisted wire. The grip shows some wear from abrasion on the inside, upper half (which would have been closest to the bearer's side).

The single ring steel scabbard is uniformly dark and was undoubtedly originally blued. Held at an angle it is possible to see that it has experienced a few very minor bumps on either side in a length of about a foot up from the drag at the very bottom. Seen from an angle, too, the scabbard shows evidence of old but very light rust spotting on both sides. There is a irregular narrow line running almost the complete distance of the underside of the scabbard, probably caused by the scabbard having rubbed over a hard surface; hung on the wall in its scabbard or crossed with its scabbard on a wall, the scratch would not be visible.

An attractive sword, somewhat remarkable for its considerable length. It was obviously made to be carried by a man who was at least six feet in height!
