Order of the Red Banner Air Force Academy (KVVA), graduate
badge, Type 1, 1950-1954.
Silver gilt, enamels; 46.0 x 26.3 mm. Type 1 graduation
badge featuring wire attachment of the star.
In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel is
practically perfect: there are tiny contact marks to the
white field but no other signs of wear. The details of the
state emblem are beautifully preserved and crisp; gold
plating is mostly washed off as is often the case but some
traces of it are still visible in recessed areas of the
emblem. Shows very attractive patina to silver on both the
obverse and reverse. The screw post has been slightly
shortened for convenience but 7 mm remaining length is more
than enough to ensure proper functionality. Includes
original Type 1 screw plate in silver.
Unlike the Mozhaisky and Zhukovskiy Engineering academies
which prepared technical cadres for the Soviet Air Force,
the Red Banner Air Force Academy concentrated on training
unit commanders. After WW2, many of the Soviet aces
including Kozhedub and Pokryshkin studied there prior to
obtaining top level leadership positions in military
aviation. Among its alumni were also many famous cosmonauts
and more than 70% of all the recipients of the titles of
