Badge of Excellent Health Care Professional, Type 1 Variation 2, #1379, circa 1942-43.

Badge of Excellent Health Care Professional, Type 1 Variation 2, #1379, circa 1942-43.

In silver-plated and gilded brass and enamels; 35.5 x 29.7 mm. Very complex layered four piece construction: the white scroll with the goblet & serpent emblem, the gilded hammer and sickle emblem, and the red star are separate, superimposed parts. Features relief pattern of the rays and lettering on the reverse and stamped maker's logo ЭМА ("EMA") in the lower left. Note also an extremely low serial number.

The badge is in fine condition. The enamel on the banner has a small chip in thin strip along the upper left edge, above the first three letter in the inscription. The rest of the banner is almost pristine, without any flaking or scratches, and retaining beautiful luster. The red star has minor buffing to its apex and a couple of tiny flakes, otherwise intact. The white scroll has a small chip in the center, plus some flaking and tiny hairline fractures.

The details of the medical emblem are nice and crisp, and the original gilt finish on the hammer & sickle emblem is beautifully preserved, with attractive toning and some of the original silver finish still clearly visible around the screw post. One of the three rivets at the bottom is missing, but the remaining two are well enough to reliably hold the parts of the badge. The screw post is full length, over 11.5 mm. The badge comes with a mint marked screw plate which is not original to it but is of the period and fits the screw post perfectly; note also the chocolate brown patina acquired over the years, perfectly matching the reverse of the badge.

This is a very attractive mid WW2 piece. The occasional damage to enamel is not very conspicuous, and the badge is very presentable overall, especially for a wartime badge.
