Honorary Discharge certificate / thank you letter issued on 10 March 1940 to Junior Sergeant M I Mestetskiy.
The document is of very large format, approx. 11½" x 16½", which was typical for certificates issued to Soviet soldiers upon their release from active duty in the first months and years after the war. The artwork includes b/w portrait of Stalin (in military uniform, with two Hero Stars - although in reality he only wore one), Kremlin tower and flags, and slogan "For Our Soviet Motherland!" The bottom part depicts Il-2 Shturmovik airplanes, T-34 tanks, and a "soldier's" Order of Glory, 3rd class.
This particular document was presented on behalf of Marshal of the Soviet Union Sokolovsky, Supreme Commander of the Group of Soviet Occupation Troops in Germany, whose name, rank and position are typographically printed in the lower right corner. The document also shows a stamp of the Military Unit #75254.
The certificate is in very good to excellent condition. It has been folded for storage as is usually the case, but shows very little overall wear and will display beautifully, especially if properly framed. There are a couple of minor separations on the margins along the fold lines, not affecting the artwork. The document is very sound, and has not been reinforced on verso. There are a few small spots but no major stains or other significant damage of any kind.
