Shock Worker of Stalin Labor Campaign badge, Type 1, #10928, circa mid-1930s.

Shock Worker of Stalin Labor Campaign badge, Type 1, #10928, circa mid-1930s.

Brass, silver plating, enamels; measures 31.7 mm in height, 31.9 mm in width (between the extending points of the upper banners); weighs 13.8 g not including the screw plate. This is the first version of the Stalin Labor Campaign award for railway employees. Superb quality. Features riveted three- piece construction: the back plate with banners, superimposed hexagon nut with black lettering, and superimposed engine locomotive with the hammer and stylized sickle forming the round opening are separate parts held by four wires. The absence of the flagpole finial on the banner is also characteristic of the early issues of the Stalin Shock Worker award. The stamped serial number is in smaller font than on the later, two-piece versions of the same badge. Note that the serial number 10926 is very low even for the first version of the badge.

In very fine to excellent condition - extremely uncommon for this early badge. The enamel appears practically perfect to the unaided eye, although a careful examination with a 10x loupe reveals a tiny surface flake in the upper left corner of the top banner. There are also a few miniscule flakes along the upper edge, also almost unnoticeable without magnification. The enamel is perfect otherwise and magnificent luster throughout. Raised details of the locomotive are perfect, completely free of detectable wear - including the clearly visible raised inscription "Stalin" on the front. Almost all of the original silver plating on the obverse is intact having only minimal wear at the highest points. The wires are perfectly tight. The screw post is full length, approx. 10 mm, and includes very scarce original screw plate marked "IZO Cooperative, Leningrad." To reiterate, condition of this badge is truly extraordinary for its type: this is one of the best example we have handled in many years.
