"Chapaev" poster for a 1947 re-release of the most famous movie ever made about the Russian Civil War.
16 3/8" x 23 7/8". The cavalryman leading the charge on this poster is clearly identifiable as Vasiliy Chapaev, a Bolshevik Civil War hero and the hero of this movie.
Very good to excellent condition. Surprisingly so, since it was produced on a very lightweight newsprint.
The margin is missing on one side but if you were to linen mount this poster (which we'd recommend) a suitable "border" could be added..
Chapaev was a real soldier whose combat exploits became the subject of this classic 1934 Socialist Realist film. The movie was a huge hit and was regularly rereleased, remaining a Soviet favorite for several generations. It has also generated an endless supply of jokes about the protagonist and his comrades-in-arms.
Every former Soviet citizen over the age of thirty will have probably seen this movie at least once in his life. Any conversation about war movies among Russians will soon find them swapping lines from "Chapaev" more easily than Americans ever quoted Seinfeld episodes!
