Order of the Red Banner 3rd award, Type 5, Variation 1, Sub- variation 1, #7165 Silver gilt, enamels; measures 46.

Order of the Red Banner 3rd award, Type 5, Variation 1, Sub- variation 1, #7165

Silver gilt, enamels; measures 46.2 mm in tall (including eyelet), 37.3 mm wide; weighs 24.3 g not including the suspension and connecting link. This variation has characteristic semicircular ridge to the reverse (referred to as valik by Russian-speaking collectors) and a star-shaped center depression. This particular specimen is from its very scarce second sub-variation featuring first line of the mint mark in slightly smaller font than the second line and with the dash in its last letter "й" located above the letter. Manufactured at the Moscow Mint in 1951, this piece is among just 500 ever produced: according to The Order of the Red Banner by Durov and Strekalov, the serial number range for this sub-variation is 6743-7233.

In excellent condition. The red enamel has a couple of miniscule flakes at the bottom and right edge of the banner, but they are almost completely unnoticeable without a magnifying glass. There are also a couple of similarly tiny flakes at the edges of the red scroll - likewise nearly undetectable to the naked eye. The enamel is perfect otherwise, free of rubbing or scratches and showing beautiful luster. The fire gilt on the wreath is well preserved, although largely obscured by silver patina. The reverse is pristine with perfect stippling and extremely attractive dark patina silver. Comes on a period suspension in steel with new ribbon. The connecting link has been replaced.
