Khalq Medal, circa 1978-79.
In brass, 32.1 mm wide. Shows Afghan State Emblem of 1978-
In excellent condition. The raised details are perfect and
crisp. The gilt finish is very nicely preserved and bright
on both sides of the medal having only some tiny spots on
the obverse and a couple of mild blemishes on the reverse
none of which are really detractive. Comes with a hard to
find, well-preserved, original ribbon.
The Khalq or "People's Party" was the extremist left wing of
the PDPA (Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan). In 1978
it seized power from the more moderate wing "Parchan"
effectively installing communist dictatorship. This led to
widespread mayhem and rebellion, and to eventual Soviet
intervention of December 1979 which ended the Khalq rule.
The Khalq Medal therefore had a very short lifespan, and
originals are very uncommon - especially is premium
condition like our example.
